🏈 HANK BARRETT’S HFL FANTASY DRAFT TIERS

🏈 HANK BARRETT’S HFL FANTASY DRAFT TIERS

Through Pick #179

Hank Barrett, HFL Analyst

“Six picks don't make a roster. But six picks are MORE than enough for me to figure out whether you walked into this draft with a plan or a damn shopping list.”

🥩 TIER 1 — “NOW THAT’S HOW YOU BUILD A FOOTBALL TEAM.”

These are the drafts Hank looks at and immediately understands.

Seattle Seahawks

Tristan Wirfs • Myles Garrett • Chris Lindstrom • Jaycee Horn • A.J. Brown • Aaron Brewer

HANK: “Somebody in Seattle understands that football games are still played by large human beings.”

Wirfs. Lindstrom. Brewer.

That's three legitimate offensive-line pieces already.

Then somehow you also have Myles Garrett, A.J. Brown and Jaycee Horn.

No quarterback yet? Fine.

Don't ruin a beautiful draft by panicking now.

Baltimore Ravens

Justin Herbert • Roquan Smith • Jordan Mailata • Darnell Wright • Kyren Williams • Dallas Goedert

This is about as Hank-friendly as a modern roster gets.

Franchise quarterback.

Middle linebacker running the defense.

Two tackles.

Running back.

Tight end.

HANK: “Boring? Maybe. You know what's really boring? Watching your quarterback get sacked seven times because you spent six rounds drafting toys.”

Baltimore has practically its entire offensive foundation already.

Kansas City Chiefs

Dak Prescott • Andrew Thomas • George Kittle • Josh Jacobs • Chris Jones • Jaylen Waddle

There isn't a wasted pick here.

Dak gets Andrew Thomas protecting him, Kittle underneath, Waddle outside and Jacobs behind him.

Then Chris Jones gets dropped into the middle of the defense.

Veteran roster. Immediate identity.

HANK: “They ain't building for 2031. They're trying to beat your ass Sunday.”

Indianapolis Colts

Joe Burrow • Sam LaPorta • Drake London • Charvarius Ward • Danielle Hunter

Burrow.

London.

LaPorta.

That's already a passing offense.

Then you grab Charvarius Ward and Danielle Hunter to establish the defense.

Indianapolis still needs protection, but the foundation is excellent.

HANK: “Now go get Burrow some damn linemen before I move you down.”

Buffalo Bills

Patrick Mahomes • Rashawn Slater • DeVonta Smith • Zach Tom • Travis Etienne

Patrick Mahomes followed by two offensive tackles?

Hank approves.

DeVonta Smith gives him a legitimate receiver and Etienne gives the offense balance.

HANK: “See? You can draft Patrick Mahomes and STILL remember there are ten other men on offense.”

New York Giants

Bijan Robinson • Jessie Bates III • Garett Bolles • Quenton Nelson • Terry McLaurin • Baker Mayfield

This might be the most old-school Hank draft in the league.

Bijan.

Bolles.

Quenton Nelson.

McLaurin.

Jessie Bates.

And instead of joining the quarterback panic, they wait until Round 6 and take Baker.

HANK: “You boys spent first-round picks on quarterbacks. New York built a football team and found theirs at pick 178.”

🔨 TIER 2 — “I SEE WHAT YOU’RE DOING.”

Hank may have questions, but these teams have a recognizable blueprint.

Las Vegas Raiders

Fred Warner • Nick Bosa • Kamari Lassiter • Breece Hall • Derwin James

Defense, defense, defense—and then Breece Hall.

Warner + Bosa + Derwin gives this team a tremendous spine.

The quarterback decision will determine where this goes.

HANK: “Don't get cute. Find somebody who can complete a third-and-seven and keep building.”

Houston Texans

Lamar Jackson • Christian Darrisaw • Jared Verse • Garrett Wilson • Luke Goedeke

This is how Hank wants a team to handle Lamar.

Don't draft Lamar and assume he'll magically carry everybody.

They've already given him Darrisaw, Goedeke and Garrett Wilson, while Jared Verse becomes the defensive cornerstone.

HANK: “They're protecting the investment. Smart.”

San Francisco 49ers

Matthew Stafford • Christian McCaffrey • Josh Hines-Allen • Mark Andrews • Bernhard Raimann • Abraham Lucas

Hank knows exactly what this is.

Stafford.

McCaffrey.

Andrews.

Two tackles.

This is a win-now roster.

HANK: “If you're drafting 99-overall Matthew Stafford, I better not hear a damn word about rebuilding.”

Minnesota Vikings

Jared Goff • Justin Jefferson • Laremy Tunsil • Lane Johnson • Dre Greenlaw • Jamel Dean

Justin Jefferson with Goff and Tunsil + Lane Johnson?

That's a real offensive infrastructure.

Greenlaw and Dean finally started addressing defense.

HANK: “Jared Goff has two elite tackles and Justin Jefferson. If he complains about protection, trade him.”

Atlanta Falcons

Caleb Williams • De'Von Achane • Jack Campbell • Greg Rousseau • Trent Williams

Only five picks so far, but I like the shape.

Young quarterback.

Explosive running back.

Pass rusher.

Middle linebacker.

And then somehow 96-overall Trent Williams falls into their lap.

That's a huge Round 5 addition.

Arizona Cardinals

Will Anderson Jr. • Zack Baun • Jeffery Simmons • Nick Emmanwori • Spencer Fano • Byron Murphy II

This defense is going to be physical.

Will Anderson + Jeffery Simmons is already nasty.

Add Baun, Emmanwori and Byron Murphy?

Hank loves the attitude.

HANK: “Now draft somebody who can score a touchdown.”

Green Bay Packers

Brock Purdy • Aidan Hutchinson • Colston Loveland • Ashton Jeanty • Zay Flowers • Calen Bullock

Nothing spectacularly weird.

Nothing obviously missing.

Purdy, Jeanty, Flowers and Loveland form a balanced young offense.

Hutchinson gives you the defensive cornerstone.

HANK: “This is the draft nobody talks about until they're 7–2.”

🧨 TIER 3 — “THIS COULD BE DISGUSTING… OR COMPLETELY INSANE.”

Hank sees the vision.

He's just not entirely convinced the architect is sober.

Los Angeles Chargers

Ja'Marr Chase • CeeDee Lamb • Derrick Henry • Trey Hendrickson • Nnamdi Madubuike

Let's review.

Ja'Marr Chase.

CeeDee Lamb.

Derrick Henry.

HANK: “WHO IS THROWING THE BALL?!”

The skill-position talent is absurd.

And Hendrickson/Madubuike gives them legitimate defensive talent.

But this roster is one quarterback decision away from either becoming terrifying or becoming the funniest draft in HFL history.

Los Angeles Rams

Penei Sewell • Creed Humphrey • Kenneth Walker • Trey Smith • Cam Ward • Kolton Miller

Hank absolutely LOVES four of these picks.

Sewell.

Humphrey.

Trey Smith.

Kolton Miller.

Kenneth Walker is going to have highways.

But then there's 76-overall Cam Ward.

HANK: “You built Fort Knox and put a question mark inside the vault.”

If Ward develops—or if the user can really play with him—this construction becomes fascinating.

Cincinnati Bengals

Derek Stingley Jr. • Sauce Gardner • Quinnen Williams • Dexter Lawrence • James Pearce Jr. • Tanor Bortolini

Stingley AND Sauce?

Quinnen AND Dexter Lawrence?

Hank is salivating.

This defense has the potential to be outrageous.

But six rounds in, their offensive identity is Tanor Bortolini.

HANK: “You planning on winning 6–3?”

Pittsburgh Steelers

Maxx Crosby • Derrick Brown • Brian Burns • Devin Lloyd • Minkah Fitzpatrick • Drue Tranquill

Pittsburgh apparently believes offense is a government conspiracy.

This defense is loaded.

Crosby.

Derrick Brown.

Burns.

Minkah.

Lloyd.

Tranquill.

HANK: “I love every player they drafted. I would also like somebody to explain how they intend to cross midfield.”

New England Patriots

Trent McDuffie • Quinyon Mitchell • Xavier McKinney • Vita Vea • Byron Young • Devin Bush

Another defensive laboratory.

McDuffie + Mitchell + McKinney behind Vita Vea?

That's tremendous.

But the Patriots have gone six straight defensive players.

HANK: “At some point the rules require you to possess the football.”

Miami Dolphins

Patrick Surtain II • Devon Witherspoon • Travis Hunter • Arvell Reese • Nolan Smith Jr.

Miami opened:

CB.

CB.

CB.

HANK: “What happened? Did somebody throw for 900 yards against this coach last season?”

Surtain and Witherspoon could make passing miserable, and Travis Hunter gives them another fascinating chess piece.

But this is EXTREME roster construction.

New York Jets

Jonathan Taylor • Cooper DeJean • Antoine Winfield Jr. • T.J. Watt • Alex Highsmith • Laiatu Latu

Jonathan Taylor and then five defenders.

T.J. Watt, Highsmith and Latu give them waves of pass rush.

DeJean and Winfield behind them.

Hank knows what the plan is:

Run Taylor.

Play defense.

Go home.

HANK: “They might win a game with nine completions.”

🧠 TIER 4 — “I NEED TO SEE WHERE YOU’RE GOING WITH THIS.”

Not bad. Not great. Hank needs another few rounds.

Jacksonville Jaguars

Jalen Hurts • James Cook • Jaylon Johnson • Nate Landman • Tee Higgins • Dion Dawkins

There's plenty to like.

Hurts, Cook and Higgins gives the offense an identity. Dawkins gives them protection. Jaylon Johnson anchors the secondary.

Hank isn't blown away, but he doesn't have much to complain about either.

HANK: “Keep drafting football players.”

Carolina Panthers

Trey McBride • Sam Darnold • Nico Collins • Paris Johnson Jr. • Jalen Pitre • Brian O'Neill

McBride + Collins is an excellent receiving foundation.

Paris Johnson and Brian O'Neill gives Darnold protection.

The question becomes how much production they can get from Sam Darnold compared with teams that invested heavily at quarterback.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Jordan Love • Denzel Ward • Bucky Irving • Tucker Kraft • Armand Membou • Ladd McConkey

Balanced.

Maybe too balanced.

Hank doesn't hate anything here.

He also doesn't see one unit yet that terrifies him.

HANK: “Solid ain't an insult. But eventually I need something you do better than everybody else.”

Washington Commanders

Jaxon Smith-Njigba • Trevor Lawrence • Kyle Hamilton • Tyler Warren • Tyler Smith

JSN at 99 overall is a centerpiece.

Kyle Hamilton can anchor the defense.

Tyler Smith helps the line.

The entire evaluation may come down to what Washington gets out of Trevor Lawrence.

New Orleans Saints

Puka Nacua • Quinn Meinerz • Joe Alt • Abdul Carter • Milton Williams • Chris Olave

Puka and Olave?

Excellent.

Meinerz and Joe Alt?

Hank approves.

Abdul Carter and Milton Williams gives them defensive upside.

There's just one small issue.

HANK: “Quarterback. Anybody? Hello?”

Denver Broncos

Drake Maye • A.J. Terrell • Nik Bonitto • Caleb Downs • Mansoor Delane

Only five selections so far.

Drake Maye is the obvious centerpiece.

Bonitto and Terrell give the defense proven pieces, while Caleb Downs gives them another potentially excellent secondary player.

Hank wants to see what they put around Maye next.

🎰 TIER 5 — “YOU’RE GAMBLING.”

These teams made choices Hank thinks could define their entire season.

Dallas Cowboys

Jayden Daniels • Malik Nabers • Jameson Williams • David Bailey • Xavier Worthy • Zach Frazier

SPEED.

SPEED.

MORE SPEED.

Daniels.

Nabers.

Jameson.

Worthy.

HANK: “Congratulations. You built the United States 4x100 relay team.”

This offense could be absolutely miserable to defend in Madden.

But three receivers in five rounds means other parts of the roster have been deliberately sacrificed.

They're betting they can simply overwhelm defenses.

Philadelphia Eagles

Christian Gonzalez • Saquon Barkley • Jaxson Dart • Sonny Styles • Tyler Linderbaum

Gonzalez and Saquon are excellent.

Linderbaum is Hank's kind of selection.

But 78-overall Jaxson Dart in Round 3 is the swing pick.

If Dart plays above that overall, nobody cares.

If he doesn't?

Every quarterback taken after him gets brought up.

Tennessee Titans

Brock Bowers • Amon-Ra St. Brown • Bo Nix • Jeremiyah Love • Talanoa Hufanga • Mason Graham

Bowers + Amon-Ra is a tremendous start.

Then Tennessee handed the offense to Bo Nix.

That's the bet.

There are weapons everywhere.

Now the quarterback has to justify the construction.

Chicago Bears

Jahmyr Gibbs • Brian Branch • Fernando Mendoza • Rueben Bain Jr. • George Pickens

Gibbs at 98 overall?

Fantastic.

Branch?

Fantastic.

Pickens?

Good weapon.

But this entire roster now revolves around 74-overall Fernando Mendoza.

HANK: “Everybody else bought a house. Chicago bought land and said they'll build one eventually.”

🚨 TIER 6 — “SOMEBODY EXPLAIN THE PLAN TO ME.”

Hank isn't saying these teams are doomed.

He's saying he's got questions.

Cleveland Browns

Josh Allen • Quinshon Judkins • Tetairoa McMillan • Nate Wiggins • DJ Turner II

Josh Allen obviously changes everything.

But after landing a 99-overall quarterback, Cleveland went RB, WR, CB, CB.

Hank wants trenches.

Immediately.

HANK: “You drafted Superman and then forgot Superman still needs five offensive linemen.”

Detroit Lions

Micah Parsons • Jalen Carter • Kerby Joseph • Joey Porter Jr. • Carson Schwesinger

This is probably the most controversial Hank placement.

Because he loves these players.

Micah.

Jalen Carter.

Kerby Joseph.

Joey Porter.

That's an outrageous defensive beginning.

But five rounds have passed.

There isn't an offensive player on the roster.

HANK: “I understand defense wins championships. You know what else helps? POINTS.”

Detroit could shoot up Hank's board quickly once the offense starts appearing.

🎙️ HANK'S DRAFT ROOM CLOSING THOUGHT

“Here's what you people gotta understand. I'm not grading names. I'm grading the PLAN.”

Seattle has a plan.

Baltimore has a plan.

Kansas City has a plan.

The Giants have a plan.

Hell, Pittsburgh has a plan. Their plan might be to outlaw offense, but at least I understand it.

Then you've got teams like Los Angeles stacking Chase, Lamb and Derrick Henry. Cincinnati building the damn '85 Bears before drafting an offense. Dallas assembling Olympic sprinters. Miami collecting cornerbacks like they're Infinity Stones.

And that's why I love a fantasy draft.

Everybody starts with the same board.

Six rounds later?

You already have 32 completely different ideas of what football is supposed to look like.

And we're nowhere close to finished.

HANK: “Call me again around Round 10. Some of these coaches are gonna make me look real smart. Others are gonna make me apologize on television.”
